When I’m out of town I reach a point when I start to miss Nashville. It’s usually when I wake up wishing I could go grab some hot chicken from Hattie B’s or a coffee from Frothy Monkey. As much as I love traveling and being in other cities, there something about home that draws you back. A pull of familiarity that is like nothing else and it makes you homesick.

Dreams are kinda like that too. They draw us in with a strange familiarity like they’ve been there all along just waiting for us to miss them. It just feels right. It’s not that we’re finding something new, it’s that we’re getting homesick for the wilderness… where we belong. Homesick for something that we’re missing. We’re being drawn, not by a strange land, but by a familiar one. One that has Hot Chicken and good coffee. Dreams are like coming home.

Homesick

What makes you homesick? What makes you feel alive when you think about it? Pay attention to that feeling. That feeling that makes your gut tighten with warmth and a smile come to your face. Whatever it is that is gently drawing you back, listen to that. When the wilderness is familiar, when your mind feels overwhelmed with an uncomfortable bliss, stand up straight and pay attention because you’re on to something. Keep searching, keep running. You’re on your way home.

Happy Monday, folks!

Question:

Have you ever experienced a feeling of ‘Homesick’ in your work? Like what you’re doing just feels right?

  • Levi Wiggins - I get seriously homesick for this city too – and I’ve been here less than a year. It’s the sunlight in our apartment, and the adventurous squirrels, I think.ReplyCancel

Children don’t have the constraints of the real world burned into their brains. They haven’t had enough time on this planet to be jaded by the “real world” either. They look at things with wonderment and imagination: Everything is new so anything must be possible. I want more of that in my life. To be able to look at things with wild-eyed wonderment. To let sudden sparks of curiosity carry me away to endless possibilities and dreams. The constraints of the real world don’t matter to a child. As adults we can’t ignore the constraints, but we can choose to imagine what it might be like without them.

What could we make if we looked at things with the wonder of a child? With the curiosity of the un-jaded and non-cynical?
Stay-Curious

Stay fiercely curious about the world we live in. Let the spark of curiosity and creativity run wild and carry you into the wilderness.

Happy Thursday!

I watched a Kid President video today that flipped my day on it’s head. In the video (which you should watch if you haven’t yet) he tells new born children why it’s so awesome to be here. One of the last things he say’s: You’re awake. You’re awesome. Live like it.
Kid President, You

I freaking love Kid President.

I woke up this morning feeling selfish. That sour feeling you get sometimes when you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed and it sets the tone for your whole day. I had that. But what I missed was the breath I took when I first opened my eyes. The fact that I opened my eyes. All a gift. It’s tough sometimes. Sometimes we don’t want to care. But we are awake. I am happy to be here and I am happy you’re here.

Want to be here today. Tell someone you’re glad they’re here, too. You’re awake. You’re awesome. Live like it.

Happy Tuesday, folks!

Imagine a huge ship sailing across the sea. The sea is choppy and the clouds are dark. There’s nothing in sight for miles in every direction. There’s no roadsigns out there. There’s no drawn lines or clear roadways, no way to be sure where you are except to know before hand.

Every ship needs a captain. Not someone who knows how to steer, but a captain who knows the waters. A captain who has a charted plan. Who’s in charge and knows the heading so she can make fast decisions. Our work, our art, is like a ship. It has to be built and it has to be sailed. Once it’s built, it needs a captain.

Make a plan for your day. Make a plan for you creativity and productivity. Even if it doesn’t quite happen the way you planned, having a plan will allow you to adjust course and get back on track. Being intentional always trumps being reactional. We can’t know exactly what’s going to happen. There might be storms, rough waters, sea monsters… but we can know what to do and how to stay on course, if we have a plan.

I

There are people on board the ship already waiting for you start the journey. But they don’t need someone to drive the boat. They need a captain. Take a look at your ship and say “Look at me. Look at me. I’m the captain now.”

Happy Monday!

It’s temping to just run, run, run, and chase your dreams. But sometimes, we are so busy running that we pass them up. We out run our own dreams in the lie of Busy is Productive. We can be busy but not be doing anything. We can be running but not going anywhere. Every once in awhile, it good to stop and look around to make sure we’re running on course, instead of on a treadmill of busyness.

Be-still

It’s hard to be still but that may be exactly what we need. To slow down, to reset, to readjust our heading before we fire up on the journey again. Because even those on the most epic of journeys need rest. There’s a time to run, there’s a time to fly, but there’s is also a time for rest. Make sure you aren’t too busy to see it.

Happy Friday, yo!
